Description:

Are you a beginner or an intermediate clayer? I gear (excuse the pun) my tutorials to all levels. Even an advanced clayer may get some enjoyment and perhaps even a few tips out of it.
If you want to fashion some 'steampunk' jewelry but don't have watch parts or immediate access to them, this tutorial would be ideal because you don't need many materials or tools to get started.
Don't worry if you don't have all of the driver bits, but every household should have at least a few on hand. If anything, at a Slotted, Square Drive, Phillips or Robertson are pretty common. If those names are like a foreign language to you, I've included a chart with names and photos.
This tutorial shows you how to make your own gears, cogs, and washers and a simple pendant. You'll make molds using the common screw driver bits, and all you need are a few other simple tools to complete molds, gears and a pendant. You don't even need a pasta machine.

Those gears looked realistic enough that when I just saw the picture, I thought they were actual metal gears. Then I read the description and saw they were made out of clay. I was impressed! This looks like a GREAT tutorial! It would be really fun to create unique gears, and make them as simple or as complicated as desired. --And color them traditional or funky.

Thanks Cat! I just posted a new tutorial for a tile bracelet that looks great with the cogs and washers produced with this tutorial. It's found here http://www.claylessons.com/tutorial/tile-bracelet-steampunk-style

I was at the JHB (buttons and Lisa Pavelka stuff) site earlier today and they have a line of steampunk buttons that would make neat clasps for jewelry made with this tutorial! I know that JoAnn carres JHB buttons but don't know if they have the steampunk ones yet. I'm putting them on my list. I don't think it's O.K. to use their buttons to make molds, but it's fine to use the buttons as elements in jewelry.

mmmm...one could use my tutorial above to make their own buttons also, lol

LOL - yes, now that you mention it, the tute could be used to make buttons. Or combined with the toggle tut for a neat variation. Synergy rocks!

That is the great thing about polymer clay tutorials...combine them and end up with something different. I love the idea of steampunk toggles!

I bought this tutorial and I LOVE IT!!!! I can not believe how many items I had around my house to use! Thank you so much for calming my nerves about keeping my supplies up from the stores! now I don't have too!
If you love steampunk you need this tutorial!!
